The Art of Putty Glaze for Stained Glass Windows

The Streeters

Leaded glass windows are visually stunning but require proper finishing to ensure longevity and beauty. One crucial step in this process is applying putty to secure the glass pieces and create a seamless finish. In this blog post, we will guide you through applying the putty and achieving a polished final result.

Dive deep into the putty process in this free companion video on YouTube: The Art of Putty Glaze for Stained Glass Windows- Start to Finish.

Making the Putty Recipe:

Start by preparing the putty mixture (glazing compound), which will act as a sealant and adhesive for the leaded glass window. You can purchase a commercial glazing compound or make your own. Here's a simple putty recipe:

Ed’s (Famous) Putty Recipe Here For over 30 years, Ed's renowned stained glass putty recipe has been the cornerstone of our studio. This time-tested glazing solution delivers impeccable waterproofing and structural stability and imparts a brilliant sheen, enhancing the beauty of your leaded stained glass windows.

  • Cover and allow the putty to homogenize overnight, allowing the ingredients to combine thoroughly.

Putty Application:

Once your putty is ready, it's time to apply it to the leaded glass window. Follow these steps:

1. Using a brush, apply a thin layer of putty to the window and along the edges of the window.

3. Clean off any excess putty with your brush, ensuring a smooth and even surface.

Turning Over and Repeating:

After the initial putty application, carefully turn over the leaded glass window to work on the opposite side. Repeat the putty application process described above, ensuring all gaps are filled, and the putty is evenly distributed.

Brushing and Polishing:

Once the putty has been applied to both sides, it's time to brush and polish the leaded glass window. Follow these steps:

1. Use a soft brush to remove any loose putty particles or debris from the surface of the window.

2. Take a fid or a similar tool and run it along the lead came lines, creating clean and defined edges.

3. Gently polish the lead and glass with a soft brush, removing any smudges or fingerprints.

Final Clean:

To complete the finishing process, give the leaded glass window a final clean:

1. Use a mild glass cleaner or a mixture of water and vinegar to wipe down the glass surface, ensuring it is free from residue or marks.

2. Pay special attention to the lead, removing any traces of putty or dirt.

Finishing leaded glass windows requires attention to detail and a systematic approach. You can achieve a professional and visually appealing finish by following the steps outlined above, which include applying the putty, brushing, polishing, and performing a final clean. Remember to handle the delicate glass with care throughout the process and enjoy the satisfaction of preserving the beauty of your leaded glass windows for years to come.
